Shot in 15 days, the film once more sees the fictional Nakamura looking for love while on tour, losing his way on a detour through the California desert before his ultimate destination of Las Vegas. Shortly before their premiere at this year’s festival, Boyle and Nakamura talked about their innovative self-distribution of “Valentine,” what sci-fi epic was the surprising inspiration for “Savings,” and the potential for an entire Goh universe with Kickstarter.

Five Questions with "DAYLIGHT SAVINGS" Director Dave Boyle:

The indie film world doesn’t commonly produce sequels (Linklater and Solondz being the obvious exceptions), and it’s even rarer to see one come as quickly as Daylight Savings does. Returning to the characters he first explored in last year’s Surrogate Valentine, namely singer-songwriter Goh Nakamura, playing a fictionalized version of himself here, Savings premieres tonight in SXSW’s 24 Beats Per Second section. Valentine made waves at Southby last year, and paired with Boyle’s still-fresh 2009 offering White on Rice, the young director is quickly establishing himself as a prolific and exciting voice.

““Daylight Savings” was shot in 15 days during a road trip that took Nakamura, Boyle and the cast from the Bay Area to a deserted town in central California to Las Vegas and then Los Angeles. Nakamura, who says his soft, folk-ish music was inspired by Elliott Smith and Crowded House’s Neil Finn, penned the score and provided a few songs. The San Francisco minimalist pop-rock trio Dreamdate also performs in the film and its leader, Yea-Ming, portrays herself as something of a dream date for Nakamura.”

“I have a long playlist on my ipod that I call “the song graveyard” of old unfinished verses,choruses and riffs. It’s a musical “to do” list that I consult every now and then.
One of the songs on there was a sad tune that started with the words “Here’s A Secret”… but then ended in gibberish. Songs can stay in this suspended state for years, until something jolts me emotionally to fill in the blanks. Such is the case for this tune.” (via Here’s A Secret - Giant Robot
